AHK World Business Outlook Fall 2023 – Vietnam Focus: Vietnam Emerges as a Potential Investment Destination for German Companies
Despite global concerns, the AHK World Business Outlook Fall 2023 survey highlights Vietnam's increasing appeal for German companies. Challenges such as low global demand (49%), skills shortages (41%), and supply chain disruptions (37%) are acknowledged, but 42% of firms prioritize diversification.
German companies have launched 26 FDI projects in Vietnam, investing nearly $221.5 million in the last 10 months. This underscores Vietnam's significance in the "China plus one" strategy, emphasizing green investments and sustainability.

In this December, AHK Vietnam and a group of five Vietnamese industrial zones, a law firm, and an HR consultancy will present opportunities for diversifying your supply chains at a workshop in Munich, Stuttgart, and Hannover, Germany. In addition to sourcing opportunities, the event will focus on the area of investment in production capacities.

Start-up Competition “GBA Business Challenge”: Unveiling the Champion of Season 4
The GBA successfully hosted the final pitch event of the GBA Business Challenge – Season IV on Monday, 6 November 2023 at Sofitel Saigon Plaza. This year’s competition theme focused on addressing social, environmental, or sustainable development issues. Out of 50 startups that underwent a rigorous 6-month training and evaluation process, five teams from various universities across Vietnam reached the top ranks of the competition.
They presented their innovative solutions to a panel of judges, competing for a prize of 350 million dong and a 12-month coaching program. HCMC University of Technology students have claimed victory in season IV with their innovative business concept, “ENSOVER: Sustainable Water Hyacinth Paper.”

Vietnam – Thüringen and Vietnam: Forging a Sustainable Partnership, November 6, 2023
On November 6, Minister President of Thüringen Mr. Bodo Ramelow with almost 100 delegates from state agencies and businesses had a fruitful briefing session with the German Ambassador Dr. Guido Hildner and Mr. Marko Walde.
Minister President Ramelow praised Vietnam's impressive economic growth in recent years, noting its prominent position among Asian nations, and highlighted Thüringen's strong economic standing at the heart of Europe. A key focus of this meeting was immigration, recruitment, and skilled labor training. He also emphasized the successful journey pursuing vocational training of Vietnamese citizens in Thüringen in past years, highlighting the strong connection and potential for future collaboration between Thüringen and Vietnam in this area.

Hanoi, Vietnam – Driving Sustainable Development: Symposium “Energy Management and Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Industries”, November 14, 2023
On November 14, 2023, AHK Vietnam organized a symposium in Hanoi focused on "Energy Management and Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Industries." The event featured experts from leading German energy companies and covered topics such as sustainability in smart cities, carbon neutrality with hydrogen cogeneration, energy storage solutions, power quality regulation, energy efficiency in historical buildings, energy-efficient doors, dry walls for increased energy efficiency, and sustainable construction. GIZ, through its Development Program project (PDP), also provided valuable insights on renewable energy and energy efficiency support in Vietnam, outlining initiatives for sustainable energy practices.
The symposium provided a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and B2B meetings between Vietnamese and German companies for potential collaborations.

Vietnam Economic Monitoring – First Ten Months of 2023
During the opening session of the 6th session of the 15th National Assembly, the Prime Minister highlighted the country's resilient economy in the global context. Vietnam's economy continues to shine, attracting foreign companies looking to expand.
Key achievements include a total import-export turnover of $558 billion, record rice exports, and substantial foreign direct investment (FDI) growth. In 2023, Vietnam attracted $25.8 billion in registered FDI, a 14.7% increase from 2022. Germany, in particular, played a major role with 459 active projects and a total investment of $2.5 billion. Over the past 10 months, Germany initiated 26 FDI projects in Vietnam, with a combined investment of nearly $221.5 million, illustrating Vietnam's appeal as an attractive destination for German companies looking to diversify their interests in Asia.

Cambodia – Electrical Machinery Sales Close to Double as Tech Exports Surge
Cambodia's exports of electrical machinery, equipment, and related products increased by 93.5% in the first nine months of 2023, reaching $2.476 billion. This accounts for 14.6% of the country's total export revenue during the period.
Experts and business leaders attribute this growth to various factors, such as the country's political stability, strategic location, skilled labor, transport network, investment laws, and access to export markets with preferential tariffs. The export of these products helps to compensate for the decline in textile exports since mid-2022, and positions Cambodia as a key source of semi-finished products for the global market.

AHK World Business Outlook – Fall 2023
The AHK World Business Outlook – Fall 2023 indicates that German companies are feeling the effects of a global economic slowdown at their international locations. Despite these challenges, they are still expanding their global involvement in many markets.
According to the survey result, in the face of the economic slowdown, companies report a stable but weaker business situation (45% positive, 14% negative). While business expectations are more cautious than in spring, they remain notably higher than economic expectations (45% optimistic, 12% pessimistic). Furthermore, companies express significantly more expansive investment intentions at their international locations compared to Germany (33% planning higher investments, 20% lower).

AHK Vietnam also made several recommendations to promote sustainability in Vietnam, such as refining the legal framework, imposing strong penalties for violations, creating incentives for sustainable businesses and raising public awareness about eco-friendly products.

Online – Digital Workshop “Insight into The Reforms of The Skilled Immigration Act”, November 2, 2023
On November 2, AHK Vietnam was pleased to contribute to the Digital Workshop from GIZ Vietnam with a focus on the general information on the Skilled Immigration Act and details of the Act’s reforms. The online event targeted leaders and personnel within 11 vocational TVET colleges, equipping them with essential knowledge about the Act to better guide students aspiring to work professionally in Germany.
During the event, Ms. Trang Dao and Ms. Nhung Ly shared their expertise about the new Skilled Immigration Act (FEG) which makes it easier for skilled workers with vocational training and individuals with practical knowledge to immigrate to Germany. Besides, a detailed recognition process for Vietnamese diplomas in Germany was also presented to the participants.

Germany – Skilled Labour Immigration Act – An Interim Assessment from the Practice, November 17, 2023
On November 17, our colleagues in charge of the two projects Hand in Hand for International Talents and ProRecognition from different countries gathered at DIHK Berlin for an event with the topic of the Skilled Labour Immigration Act on highlight.
Opening the event were Dr. Achim Dercks, Deputy Chief Executive at DIHK, Michael Kellner, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), and Prof. Dr. Sabine Döring, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The event highlighted the successful immigration process of skilled labor to Germany, with two participants from Vietnam sharing their personal stories. The event fostered valuable exchange among stakeholders to optimize skilled labor recruitment for German companies.

On October 26, 2023, a delightful event "German Riesling Night" organized by the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, AHK Vietnam, Renaissance Riverside Saigon, and our wine-distributing partners took place in HCMC. This wine-tasting event was dedicated to exploring the world of German Riesling, known for its complexity and versatility. It featured 20 different types of Riesling from four major wine regions in Rheinland-Pfalz: Moselle, Rhine-Hesse, Nahe, and Palatinate.

This year marks the 13th edition of the Science Film Festival in Vietnam. From October to December 2023, the Goethe-Institut will continue to cooperate with its long-standing partners, THD Education Solutions Ltd., and some local partners and schools to implement the annual organized science film festival.
