EuroCham Cambodia and GIZ Business Scout recently visited Ho Chi Minh City at the invitation of AHK to enhance Vietnam-Cambodia cooperation and explore opportunities for collaboration in the CLMV Sub-region.  

During their visit, the delegation toured the factories of Viessmann, Bosch TGA, and framas, learning about their manufacturing processes and business environments in Vietnam. Throughout the visits to the vocational center at Bosch TGA, LILAMA 2, and Anre Maisen, they also expressed interest in learning about the establishment of vocational centers and the Vietnamese cooperation dual vocational training platform, which follows German standards. This visit provided valuable information on how to collaborate and address the growing demand for skilled laborers in Cambodia.

Vietnam has been actively expanding and modernizing its railway infrastructure to reduce reliance on road and air transportation. Notably, a $58.6 billion high-speed rail project will connect Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Despite the economic slowdown, Việt Nam’s insurance sector remains robust, with total assets of insurance companies reaching nearly VND 913.37 trillion in the first 11 months, marking an 11.12% increase from the previous year. While non-life insurance revenue grew by 2%, the life insurance segment experienced a decline of approximately 12.5%. Notably, insurance benefit payments surged by 31.1% to around VND 86.47 billion.  

The Ministry highlighted the industry’s crucial role in social security and economic development, emphasizing the need for addressing challenges like legal framework enhancement, product and service quality improvement, and digital technology adoption.

The Vietnam Investment Review (VIR) recently interviewed GBA Co-Chairman Mr. Elmar Dutt on the topic of “The German Mark On Vietnam over the Decades”. He shared his insights on the state and prospects of German investment and trade in Vietnam, which have been developing for 35 years. He also suggested some measures to enhance the cooperation between the two countries. Mr. Dutt expressed his optimism about the future of German investment in Vietnam, despite the current challenges and gaps.

The topic of “The Move Towards Effectively Implementing EPR in Vietnam” was the focus of an interview between GBA Board member Mr. Alexander Ziehe and the Vietnam Investment Review (VIR) in December 2023. Mr. Ziehe stressed the importance of EPR programs for foreign-invested enterprises and direct local suppliers, as they have to meet the new sustainability standards set by Europe and global listed companies. He also identified the main obstacles for Vietnam in terms of internal and external capabilities and offered suggestions to help authorities appreciate the benefits of such regulations for investment, local competitiveness, and the labour market. These efforts aim to boost the sustainability level across the country.

On 13.12.2023, the Council and the European Parliament reached a provisional agreement on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), requiring companies to embed human rights and environmental due diligence in their supply chains. The scope includes EU companies with 500+ employees and €150 million turnover, non-EU companies with €300 million turnover in the EU, and EU companies with 250+ employees and €40 million turnover (€20 million in high-risk sectors). The financial sector is temporarily excluded. Companies are required to align with a 1.5°C global warming goal, with incentives for larger firms. The directive covers public procurement, civil liability, and downstream supply chain obligations. Non-compliance may result in sanctions up to 5% of global turnover.

"The Return" is Le Brothers' latest art project, continuing their exploration of "Separation and Reunion" themes. Originating from "The Bridge" in 2010, the project spans on-site performances from Vietnam's Hien Luong Bridge to the North-South Korean border and the Berlin Wall.  

During their two-month residency in Germany from March to April 2023, the twin artists engaged with the Vietnamese expatriate community in various cities, capturing their stories through a multimedia installation featuring hundreds of selected photos and a video. The exhibition, a metaphor for leaving and returning, creates a vibrant collage panorama of the diaspora, blending memories and reality.
