WORKSHOP “ENHANCING COMPETITIVENESS FOR TEXTILE AND GARMENT ENTERPRISES ON THE PATH OF GREEN GROWTH” 📍 On December 1st, 2023, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in collaboration with Global PR Hub Joint Stock Company organized the workshop "Enhancing Competitiveness for Textile and Garment Enterprises on the Path of Green Growth", dedicated to Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises. The event aims to enhance the competitiveness of the textile industry in the face of green and sustainable consumption trends. 📌 Within the workshop, speakers from the Delegation of the German Industry and Commerce in Vietnam (AHK Vietnam), the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), SolarEdge, LONGi, and HDBank updated the overall picture of Vietnam's textile industries and the challenges that textile and garment enterprises face in the green transition while proposing recommendations to enhance capacity and competitiveness for enterprises. The seminar brought together 100 representatives from textile and garment enterprises, associations, financial companies, and energy companies. 🔵 Representing AHK Vietnam, Ms. Huyen Nhu Lanh, #Business_Scout, Project Manager of the Sustainable and Climate Resilient Supply Chains in Vietnam project, delivered the keynote "Responsible and Sustainable Business Transformation to Enhance Competitiveness of Vietnam's Textile Industry". Ms. Nhu Lanh outlined the opportunities that the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) brings to Vietnam's textile industry. Furthermore, information on Germany's Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (#LkSG) and responsible business practices in the context of green transition to increase the competitiveness of Vietnam's textile industry was also provided. 👕👚MAKING ASIA’S TEXTILE INDUSTRY FAIRER FOR PEOPLE AND THE PLANET The textile and garment industry is a key sector of the economy in many Asian countries, a significant contributor to the GDP and creator of millions of jobs. In some countries, this industry accounts for up to 80 per cent of export revenue. Although the underlying conditions in these countries vary considerably, the major challenges facing the industry are in common: ensuring decent conditions for the workers and reducing environmental impact. The German Government supports Asia’s textile industry address those challenges to become more socially, environmentally and economically sustainable, though a GIZ-implemented project on “Promoting Sustainability in the Textile and Garment Industry in Asia” (FABRIC). The project brings together change makers of the Asian garment and textile industry and makes production processes fairer for people and for the planet. By identifying the common interests of key actors, FABRIC supports sustained knowledge transfer and greater cooperation between countries and across the global supply chains. Working closely with other relevant global and regional initiatives, FABRIC currently operates in six countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Viet Nam. In Viet Nam, FABRIC has seen the following results: ♻️130 factories trained in Climate Action, many of whom are now better able to scale up the acquired know-how across their supply chains. ♻️187 factories supported in chemical management, 74% of whom became capable of improving their chemical management score by more than 20%. 📝 A Code of Conduct and practical manual on the subject of sexual harassment in the workplace was developed with public and private entities. Mr. Boobalan Pitchamuthu President Director Texcoms Worldwide Mr. Debasish Kumar Saha CEO, Esquire Group, Bangladesh The session deliberated upon how the Asian countries should boost regional cooperation to take the maximum benefit of the China + policy that has emerged. Panelists opined that Asian countries like India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia should work towards having a more resilient and integrated supply chain starting from the fibre to finished goods like apparel and made-ups and should also utilize the latest IT solutions to make them more robust. Panelists suggested that in order to capture the share of China from global trade, other Asian countries should work towards achieving the scale and should also adopt flexibility in their manufacturing to meet the emerging demands of customers. It was also discussed that Asian countries should work towards having common standards, certificates and cooperation in Customs for increased mutual cooperation in the region. Panellists opined that Asian countries should ask their respective Governments to come up with new HSN codes for garments and other textile items made-up of recycled fibres. Ideas to incorporate the costs of obtaining sustainability and other certifications in the supply chains were also discussed with manufacturers and various brands and sourcing companies.
