The European footwear industry is undergoing a transformative shift towards a nearshoring strategy, epitomized by the mantra 'made in Europe, sold in Europe.' This approach emphasizes localized production and supply chains, mirroring a broader trend in the fashion sector. Major brands like Veja are championing this movement, sourcing materials, particularly Leather Working Group (LWG) gold-certified leather, aligning with the industry's commitment to transparency. Benefits of a local supply chain include agile production, reduced transportation costs, and shorter time to market. The strategy also mitigates risks associated with global disruptions, as observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Decisions on nearshoring are context-driven, considering factors beyond geography. The European footwear industry, with fewer migrant workers and numerous family-run factories, presents a low-risk manufacturing environment. To enhance ethical practices, engaging with organizations like SMETA for on-site audits and assessments is recommended. Risk assessments covering country, sector, and supplier risks, along with benchmarking against ethical brands, further contribute to sustainable practices. Effective communication is key, urging companies to learn the local language and maintain strong ties with suppliers. In-house quality control and regular team visits ensure ethical standards are upheld throughout the manufacturing process. In essence, 'made in Europe, sold in Europe' represents not just a manufacturing strategy but a commitment to sustainability, resilience, and ethical practices in the European footwear industry. Nearshoring, coupled with ethical assessments, is shaping a robust and responsible future for the industry. #LocalizeAndOptimize #EthicalFashionEU #ResilientSupplyChain #TransparencyInFashion #MadeInEurope

Still wondering why digital labels on textile and footwear products, is not just beneficial but essential for the textile and footwear industries? Well, lets go: Environmental Impact: Digital labels would significantly reduce waste from physical labels and help in decarbonization efforts. An estimated 343,000 MT of CO2e could be eliminated from industry supply chains. Transparency: Consumers can access comprehensive information about the product, including material traceability and supply chain details. This promotes accountability and trust in brands. Accessibility: Information can be delivered in multiple languages, ensuring a broader audience can understand the product details. Plus, the ability to zoom in on digital devices can make the information easier to read for many users. Comfort: Digital labels can eliminate discomfort caused by physical labels, thus encouraging consumers to retain the label attached to the product for longer. Circular Economy: Retaining product information can enhance the product's value over time. It unlocks new opportunities for resale, repair, rental, upcycling, or recycling, thereby promoting a circular economy. Innovation: The use of digital labels opens up possibilities for leveraging technology like augmented reality (AR) or machine learning to provide interactive and personalized product information. Regulation: Digital labels could help enforce industry standards and regulations more efficiently as the information is easier to update and track. Cost-Efficiency: Over time, shifting to digital labels could prove more cost-effective than the production, attachment, and disposal of physical labels. Thanks for sharing Julie M.H. 130 organizations have come together to urge authorities around the world (such as the Federal Trade Commission in the US) to support the use of digital labels on textile and footwear products. Here are some key points in the letter: -Shifting to the use of digital labels would significantly reduce labeling waste and significantly aid in decarbonization efforts, resulting in the elimination of at least 343,000 MT of CO2e from industry supply chains. -With digital labels, consumers could access more information about a product, such as material traceability and supply chain details. -More consumers would be able to access this information because it could be delivered in different languages (also, users can zoom in on a digital device). -These labels could be much more comfortable than currently used labeling tape. Without discomfort and with more information available, consumers would be more likely to keep the label attached to the product. -Keeping this information with the product would make these products more useful and valuable for longer periods in the circular economy while unlocking new opportunities for resale, repair, rental, upcycling, or recycling. https://lnkd.in/gQDJm9qY
