Founded in 2011, Carmen Stevens Wines crafts ultra-premium wines that express the soil, sun, aspect, and people that help to make them for the pleasure of the wine lover. Carmen Stevens Wines made its mark with a magnificent maiden vintage in 2014. But this winery's story goes far beyond its exquisite wines. Carmen Stevens herself has been a driving force in the South African wine industry since she qualified as a winemaker back in 1995. What makes Carmen's journey so remarkable is that she graduated as the first black South African to study the art of winemaking in her home country. With passion and determination, she shattered barriers and blazed a trail for others to follow. Fast forward to January 2019, and Carmen accomplished yet another milestone. She registered the first 100% black-owned winery in South Africa, right in the Stellenbosch region. Carmen Stevens Wines stands as a testament to the fusion of tradition and innovation. The vines are tall and long, harvesting is done on large ladders with arms up (technique called “Ramada”). In the Setúbal Peninsula, the region is divided in two landscapes: one close to water and the other close to the mountains. And so, mountains protect the vines from the influence of the Atlantic. September is on its way, and once again we are going to see more than 100 releases from some of the wine world’s most exciting names coming out through the Place de Bordeaux. It’s now three years since I released the first ever overview of all of these wines, breaking down what you need to know and picking out the must buys. This year’s report is coming out on Thursday August 31, but I can already tell you that some of the most exciting wines are coming from Spain. Both old and new, these are projects that you should get behind - whether the brilliant Yjar and Vinedos de Matallana from Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza, the stunning De la Riva from Ramiro Ibáñez and Willy Perez, or Dolio from Fernando Gonzalez Riveiro in Ribera Sacra. These are wines that make you want to dive in and learn more. Another wine-tasting event. The theme of the evening is Bordeaux Greats. - here, the event was about Bordeaux varieties found in Hungary. (Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) But there were also some wines made from native Hungarian grape varieties. What is often unknown even to local wine consumers. ( Kadarka, Kékfrankos és Turán ) Wineries mainly from Eger, Szekszárd, Villány, Sopron.  It was interesting to talk to a couple of winemakers again. About the relationship between winemaking and hospitality. About the plans, the future, and rare items and vintages that are not yet available on the market. And the international assessment of the Hungarian wine industry.  And to discover new wineries unknown to me. Discovering new wineries is an exciting adventure that can lead to finding hidden gems. Combine the pleasant with the useful. For my part, these two outstanding wines surprisingly surpassed the others, so they became the clear winners of the event. 1., 2020 Bock BV Cabernet Sauvignon Selection from Villány Jammertal vineyard. Only 800. bottles were produced. 2., Havas & Timár Franom 2021. Franom White.  Artisanal wine - White Cabernet Franc! made only 630 bottles. A small vineyard of 1.5 hectares in Eger historical wine region.
